What this app does not do

We would rather tell you straight than let you file something that is missing a piece. If any of the things below apply to you, this calculation is not the whole picture — please speak to your accountant before you file.

The list

  • Scottish taxpayers. Scottish Income Tax has different bands and rates. This app only handles England, Wales and Northern Ireland for now.
  • Capital gains. Profit from selling shares, property or other assets is not included. That needs the separate Capital Gains section.
  • Foreign income. Overseas income, foreign property and the remittance basis are not included.
  • Capital allowances. Buying equipment, vehicles or other assets for the business, and the capital allowances you could claim on them, are not included. Only day-to-day running costs are.
  • Losses brought forward. A trading or rental loss from an earlier year cannot be entered or set against this year’s income. A loss made this year is reported, not carried forward automatically.
  • Partnerships. Income from a business partnership is not included. Only a sole trade you run on your own is covered.
  • More than one trade. This app handles one self-employed trade. If you run more than one, the figures need adding together by your accountant.
  • Trusts and estates. Income from a trust or estate is not included.
  • Pension income and the pension annual allowance. State, company and private pension income is not included, and neither is the pension annual allowance charge. Only relief at source (net) contributions are handled.
  • The £150,000 allowance restriction. The £1,000 trading allowance and the £1,000 property allowance are not available once the relevant receipts go over £150,000. That restriction is not modelled, so the figure is flagged instead.
  • Payments on account from earlier years. Payments on account asked for by an earlier return, and anything that reduces or postpones them, are not worked out here. You can enter what you have already paid, but we cannot check it against HMRC’s records.
  • Anything that needs last year’s return. This app looks at one year on its own. Averaging, overlap relief, comparing years, and anything else that depends on an earlier return is not included.
  • Submitting to HMRC. This version does not send anything to HMRC. Submitting online is coming in a later phase. You can still print or save your figures and give them to your accountant.
  • Paying your bill through the app. We do not take payments. When you know what you owe, you pay HMRC directly.

And these, which are part of the app already

  • Nothing is sent to HMRC. Submitting online is coming in a later version. You will never see a “submitted” message here.
  • We do not take payments. Your tax is always paid to HMRC directly.
  • Not tax advice. We do the arithmetic on the figures you give us. Where the answer depends on your circumstances, talk to your accountant.
